There are a number of funding programs and awards to support science, innovation and medical research in Australia. The NSW Office for Science and Medical Research and the Department of State and Regional Development directly support major grant programs and prize and award schemes.
NSW Spinal Cord Injury and Related Neurological Conditions Research Grants Program
The NSW Government's total commitment to research in spinal cord injury and neurological conditions includes $11 million that has been committed over the four year period from 2007-2011. This money will fund a Career Development Fellowship (Research funding up to $200,000), Clinical Research Fellowship (Research funding up to $200,000) and four PhD Travel Scholarships (Up to $5000). ANZ Trustees Medical Research in Queensland and ANZ Trustees Children's Medical Research in Queensland
These two programs provide medical research funding in Queensland for: PhD scholarships (Scholarship amounts will be based on National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) stipend guidelines but may vary at the discretion of the Trustee) and Establishment grants (The Trustees hope to award two (2) grants of $50,000 each.). Queensland Emergency Medicine Research Foundation (QEMRF)
The Queensland Emergency Medicine Research Foundation (QEMRF) will support research directed at improving the care of patients in Emergency Departments and to develop Emergency Medicine research capacity in Queensland. Allied Health Research Program
The Allied Health Research Program contributes funds to provide financial assistance to allied Health employees early in their career to expand and enhance the Allied health workforce as part of the greater Queensland Allied Health Scholarship Scheme. Applications for 2009 closed in January. See

Health Research Fellowships
The Health Research Fellowships are to provide salary support to practicing clinicians or health professionals to quarantine time to undertake clinical or health service research. Applications close Monday 28 September 2009. See

Clinical Academic Fellowships
The Queensland Clinical Academic Fellowships aim to enhance support for Queensland's outstanding health and medical researchers. These fellowships will provide 'top-up' funding of up to $75,000 to create new positions between Queensland Hospitals and Queensland Universities.
Individual researchers are not eligible to apply for this fellowship. The application process requires the collaboration of Queensland publicly funded health care facilities and Queensland universities to design new positions that will increase research activity and provide a focus on clinical excellence. Senior Clinical Research Fellowships
Expressions of Interest for the second round of the Senior Clinical Fellowships are now open. The Senior Clinical Research Fellowships (SCRF) are to provide funding of up to AUD 850,000 pa for five years to attract and retain clinician researchers to Queensland who are international leaders in their field. Successful applicants will be at the forefront of research, development and innovation, and will be expected to bring new clinical and intellectual resources that will further stimulate Queensland's research potential. Queensland Health Smart State Research Program ('Near Miss')
The Queensland Health Smart State Research Program provides discretionary funding for research proposals prepared by public sector employees, which were assessed as fundable, but unable to secure funding under the NHMRC Project Grant Scheme. For more information

Golden Casket Foundation
Golden Casket Foundation was established in April 2005 by the Queensland Government and Golden Casket Lottery Corporation Limited. The Foundation uses interest accrued on unclaimed first division lotto prizes to reinvest in Queensland's future by supporting medical research in Queensland. In 2005 almost $1 million in funding was injected into vital Queensland-based medical research.
Medical Research Grants
Grant amounts vary depending on unclaimed lotto prizes. Applicants can apply for a grant up to $250,000 (including GST) per application per funding round for projects or equipment. Strong preference will be given to projects of one year or less duration. However, consideration will be given to projects of high merit that have a duration of up to two years. One-off grants will also be available for the purchase of equipment.

The Neurosurgical Research Foundation
The Neurosurgical Research Foundation raises money to fund research into disease and injury of the Brain and Spinal cord. Research is undertaken in Australian Universities and teaching hospitals.
Research Fellowships
Research Fellowships to the value of $50,000 each for individuals to undertake research for one year at the University of Adelaide in 2010.

ANZ Trustees Programs
Medical Research and Technology in Victoria
This program provides funding in Victoria for basic, clinical, and medical research, and specific projects (not for general infrastructure). The program recognises that philanthropic funding can address the gap in funding for specialised equipment related to specific projects. Assessments and recommendations for funding are made by an expert panel. Grants are in the order of $6,000 to $30,000. Applications close 1 July each year. See

Victorian Neurotrauma Initiative (VNI)
The VNI is a major $63 million investment in research-led improvements for treatment, management, and quality of life outcomes for neurotrauma patients. As a health research fund, the VNI supports a diverse range of neurotrauma projects in basic, clinical, rehabilitation and disability research disciplines. Funding Initiatives have included Project Funding, Targeted Research Funding, Program Grants, Neurotrauma Fellowships, Skill Development Awards, Conference Support Scheme, Research Seminar Series, and Sponsorship.

Western Australian Government (Government of Western Australia - Department of Health)
New Independent Researcher Infrastructure Support (NIRIS) Awards
The Department of Health has made available funding to provide one-off NIRIS Awards in 2009 in recognition of outstanding new independent medical and health researchers in Western Australia. Applications are now invited for one-off awards of up to $10,000 each (excluding GST) for a period of twelve months commencing in calendar year 2009. Applications closed in March.
Neurotrauma Research Program (NRP)
This funding is offered through WAIMR (Western Australian Institute for Medical Research) and is for research into the treatment and repair of brain and spinal cord injuries. The NRP intends to invite a new round of funding during the second half of 2010. This will be announced on the NRP pages of the WAIMR website (www.nrp.org.au)
